Breastfeeding support

All of our hospitals providing maternity services have lactation consultants on staff.

The lactation consultant is available if you need extra assistance with breastfeeding. They can provide you with details of an external service such as the Australian Breastfeeding Association.

Monash Health’s breastfeeding policy

Our Monash Health breastfeeding policy aligns with the World Health Organisation recommendations to protect, promote and support exclusive breastfeeding from birth to the first six months of a child’s life, with breastfeeding continuing for two years and beyond along with safe family foods.

  • Monash Health recognises that some women cannot or choose not to breastfeed.
  • Individual support and education will be provided to all women cared for, to enable them to make feeding decisions that are right for themselves and their babies.
  • Monash Health employs Internationally Certified Lactation Consultants at the four sites that provide maternity and newborn services. Our Lactation Consultants are available for breastfeeding information, education and support, during pregnancy, during hospital admission and when discharged home.
